General Information
Resistance wire is a type of high resistance electrical wire. The wire resists the flow of electricity, and converts the electrical energy into heat.
Application for resistance wire includes resistors, heating elements, electric heaters, electric ovens, toasters, and many more.
Nichrome, a non-magnetic alloy of nickel and chromium, is commonly used to make resistance wire because it has a high resistivity and resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. When used as a heating element, resistance wire is usually wound into coils. One difficulty in using nichrome wire is that common electrical solder will not stick to it, so the connections to the electrical power must be made using other methods such as crimp connectors or screw terminals.
FeCrAl, a family of iron-chromium-aluminum alloys (Kanthal APM, A-1, D and AF etc.) used in a wide range of resistance and high-temperature applications is also used in the form of resistance wires.

4. Typical Applications
Resistohm 135 is a ferritic alloy of the FeCrAl family, which can be used as heating element of resistance up to 1200°C.
Resistohm 135 must be used in a dry environment in order to avoid rust because this is not a stainless alloy.
Elements realised in Resistohm 135 have an excellent life time in a sulphurous environment, and particularly when atmosphere is also oxidizing.
Resistohm 135 is normally used in top cookers with ceramics, pottery furnaces elements, and tubular elements.
Because of its resistance to carbonaceous atmospheres, Resistohm 135 is chosen for the production of cigarette lighters and fuel burners elements.
Q1. What kind of materials (symbols) are used for electical heating wires?
A. Ni-Cr series alloys and Fe-Cr-Al series alloys are mainly used.
Q2. What is the advantage or disadvantage depending on the materials?
A. We will briefly show you them in Table 1
